Tuesday 11 January 2005. Both the private view and the lecture were attended in record numbers. The subject was clearly a popular one and it must have delighted Hans’s widow, Tanya Schmoller, to discover that so many people are interested in her husband’ ;s work.
Tanya opened the lecture with some heart-warming anecdotes about life with Hans. Jerry Cinamon then entertained and info rmed the crowd with an account of the years he spent working under Hans Schmoller at Penguin. Lastly, Phil Baines discus sed Schmoller’s achievements as a designer at Penguin where he continued the legacy started by his predecessor Jan Tschichold.
The best part of the event was undoubtedly the exhibition, curated by David Pearson, which was beautifully put together. It included numerous layouts and proofs marked up by Schmoller and it was these, much more than the finished designs, t hat provided a real insight into the man and his work. Schmoller had an incredible eye for typographic detail and this e xhibition was a lesson for any budding typographer.
