Fast type, slow type

The fifth annual Friends of St Bride Library conference

16–18 October 2006
at the Custard Factory, Birmingham

A brief introduction

Fast type may be that which is hastily made: a note scribbled on the back of an envelope, a telephone number jotted on the palm of the hand. Alternatively, fast type may be words produced for reading at speed, on the side of a car, or the tail of a plane. Perhaps fast type has been designed for immediate impact, but it may have been produced to be short-lived and seen just fleetingly. Then again, fast type may be that which is at the forefront of design.

Slow type, on the other hand, is measured in design and considered in application. It may be type that lingers in our memory or persists in the type specimen books. Slow type may have been a long time in the making or enduring in use. It may also be type that makes us stop, slow down and stare.

‘Fast type, slow type’ is the fifth in an annual series of international design conferences, which until this year have been held at St Bride Library. In 2006, Birmingham was chosen to host the event to coincide with the Baskerville in the City celebrations and Plus international design expo.

We look forward to seeing you there!
